Fiber optics in Leipzig – who is building where, and what you should do now
In Leipzig, several companies are building fiber optics: OXG with Vodafone for over 27,400 households, the Telekom in Engelsdorf and Sommerfeld, 1&1 also there, Vodafone subsidized in the city center. The Deutsche GigaNetz , on the other hand, has stopped its expansion for the time being. We check what is actually coming to your address – and you don't sign anything at the front door.
Who builds fiber optics in Leipzig?
Five projects, five different responsibilities. This is the status according to the city of Leipzig and providers:
OXG Fiber optics (with Vodafone)
Since 2025, for over 27,400 Leipzig households, without pre-marketing quota, house connection free of charge. OXG builds and operates the network, Vodafone sells the tariffs – as Vodafone fiber optics, you can also get them from us.
Vodafone promoted
Around 7,000 households in Reudnitz-Thonberg, Centre-Southeast, Centre-South and Centre-West, construction period until 30 June 2027.
Telekom in Engelsdorf and Sommerfeld
4,400 household congstarTelekom s and businesses, construction started in 2026, first customers in mid-2027, completed in 2029.

What is the difference between OXG fiber and "normal" fiber?
No one in the technology. Fiber optics are fiber optics – the difference is who owns the line and who sells the contract. OXG is a company owned by Vodafone and Altice, which builds and operates the network; the tariffs on it are Vodafone fiber optic tariffs. In the Telekom network, Telekom, congstar and 1&1 sell. For you, this means that you don't have to "choose" a network – we check your address and show you which contracts are possible there.
Deutsche GigaNetz stopped – what now?
If you have a GigaNetz contract but no connection is being built, we will check for you what is in the house: Vodafone cable or PŸUR up to 1.000 MBit/s, DSL or another fibre optic network. Bring your contract with you – we will see if and how you can get out without you paying twice.
Why not sign at the front door?
There are many representatives on the road when it comes to fiber-optic expansion. The consumer advice centers warn against contracts under pressure. We offer the same tariffs – without time pressure, with comparison, and you know in advance what will arrive at your address.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the fiber-optic house connection cost me anything?
For OXG, 1&1 and Telekom , the connection to the apartment is free of charge during the expansion. After that, it can be subject to a fee – so it's worth checking early.
As a tenant, do I have to ask the landlord?
For the house connection, the provider needs the consent of the owner (licensing agreement). You conclude the tariff yourself.
Do I need fiber optics at all?
For streaming, home office and multiple devices, 300 to 1.000 MBit/s cable is often sufficient. Fiber optics are worthwhile if they are already in place or if you are missing cables.
Is there also fiber optics in the district of Leipzig?
Yes, the Deutsche Glasfaser is building the WuLaWe fiber optic with envia TEL in several municipalities, in Wurzen, Thallwitz, Bennewitz and Lossatal. We check addresses in the east and southeast of Leipzig as well as in the city.
Can I cancel my old contract if fiber optics come?
Not automatically. We check the term and notice period and schedule the change so that you don't pay twice – more about the contract extension.
